CROMWELL, Conn. (WTNH) – The Better Business Bureau is alerting people about several scams related to Valentine’s Day that they say can be heartbreaking as well as expensive.
The scams include “catfishing” where con artists create fake profiles on line through social media, e-mail and on dating websites with the intention of courting for financial gain. The scammers usually meet someone on line and ask they send money for a plane ticket so they can meet in person and then never show up.
Another scam is “ecards” where on line cards on sent out that contain hyperlinks capable of stealing your personal information and contacts. The BBB says legitimate cards contain a link and confirmation code to view the card.
Scammers will also pretend to be florist selling flowers or chocolate or jewelry either over the phone or on line.
The BBB says be skeptical of such websites, e-mails or phone calls. The BBB says you can go to bbb.org to check vendors you are considering doing business with.
