COLUMBUS, Ga. – Multiple crews have cleared the sidewalk just outside the Columbus Post Office, located on 12th Street, after receiving a call around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday about a suspicious substance.
Fire officials say they got the call around noon about a mysterious white powdery substance. Postal workers sorting mail also told police about their discovery of the substance on some of the envelopes. Fire and hazmat crews soon arrived on the scene outside the post office 12th St. was blocked at 2nd Avenue while crews ran tests on the substance.
Several of those tests came back negative. However, out of precaution, the envelopes will be sent to Atlanta for further tests.
The post office reopened just before 1 p.m.
