Columbus preps to celebrate and honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

Columbus, Ga.- The Mayor’s Commission on Unity, Diversity and Prosperity is working hard  to put the final touches and plans in place for the Dream Lives celebration that happens Saturday.

The entire event is made up of a couple of walks and runs in the morning followed by the main event at noon: The Dream Lives Unity Processional.

Basically this is when 3 groups of people will start in 3 different places and at the same time march together toward The Liberty Theatre. It’s at this historical cultural hub where they will all celebrate and hear from several guest speakers.

Judy Tucker, with the The Mayor’s Commission on Unity, Diversity and Prosperity, tells News 3 that Columbus has always held an event to honor and celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr., however about 3 years ago she says they wanted to include more intentional reverence. The board decided to do something more honorable and that is when The Dream Lives Unity Processional was born.

“There are so many things we could say about him and so many things we could see about him, but I think what he would really love about this is that we all of these people coming about on his behalf and we have this symbolic gesture of people coming from three different directions of our city and meeting to become one and I just think and what I would love to do is see that from the air. Just to see how wonderful that looks as everyone comes together,” says Tucker.
