Essang Bassey is a natural… He’s been Columbus High School’s best football player for a couple years now.. And this year, he had a chance to shine.
“Personally I thought it was a long time coming.. Sophomore year we weren’t too good. Freshman year we were 0 and 10. Junior year we kind of got the ball rolling a little bit and then Senior year everything just happened to start clicking,” Bassey says.
And it certainly clicked for Bassey. This year he had 1,100 offensive all-purpose yards, he averaged 30 yards on kickoff returns. Combine that with three fumble recoveries on defense, including returning one for a touchdown.
But Bassey isn’t just a stats leader, his senior leadership acted as a glue to piece together a team that hasn’t been to the playoffs since 1994.
“I think this group of guys, we just got tired of losing. you know once you finally reach a point when your tired of losing you fight back. that’s what we did, everything we had to do to win we did this year and it paid off,” he said.
He isn’t just an outstanding athlete either.. He has a 3.7 GPA and plans on being a sports agent after graduating college from Wake Forest. He knows while college and ACC football await, he doesn’t just want to be remembered for his game, but his approach to the game.
“I don’t want it to be like “Oh I remember him from high school… He played football, he was a jock he had a big head or something like that. So i just try and stay humble. I just want people to remember me for being humble in anything that i do,” he says.
And it looks like he’s on the right track.
