FORT MITCHELL, Ala. – Russell County officials say 19-year-old Travon Harmon has been arrested in the shooting of an elderly man, a woman and another man. Officials accuse Harmon of killing his grandfather, 77-year-old Leroy Harmon, his sister, 26-year-old Bianca Harmon, and critically injuring his childhood friend, 21-year-old Devonte Howard.
Sheriff Heath Taylor says deputies met the teen coming out of a house on Bradley Road in Fort Mitchell around midnight Tuesday. The teen confessed to shooting his family and friend, and was arrested without incident.
“It’s way more common than any of us want to believe or imagine,” Sheriff Taylor explained about family shootings.
He even referenced Monday’s Upatoi shootings when speaking about the violent nature of this crime. Harmon now faces capital murder charges.
“…the state of the defendant’s mind, whether he had mental issues, all of those things come into play when you’re making a decision about whether or not to seek the death penalty,” Russell County District Attorney Kenneth Davis said. This case on its facts, the elements of the case are there for a capital charge and for the death penalty potentially.”
Harmon was also a suspect in a Columbus murder case back in July 2015.
Harmon faces a preliminary hearing later this week. His case is expected to be bound over to district court, where a grand jury could indict him as early as February. Davis does not expect to be posted.
