Black Hawk pilot surprises son by coming home for Christmas

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – A Gardendale preschooler got his Christmas wish on Monday. Four-year-old Ty Whistler just wanted his father, Black Hawk Pilot Derek Whistler, to be home for the holiday.

On Monday at Bass Pro Shops in Leeds, Whistler surprised his son at Santa’s workshop.

“I was excited. I was ready to see him, ready to hang out, and just be with my boys,” Derek Whistler said.

“I love him. I love him so much,” said Ty Whistler.

Derek’s wife, Stephanie, says every time anyone asked Ty what he wanted for Christmas, he gave them the same answer–to see his father.

“Being gone as much as I have, at a certain point, I wondered if he just forgotten who I was, but to know that’s all he wanted, it brought it back home,” said Derek Whistler.

He’s spent the last nine months in Kuwait, away from four-year-old Ty and eighteen-month-old Colt. His Christmas wish–spending as much time with them as he can.

“I got it. To be home. To be home and be able to spend time with my family,” he said.
