PHENIX CITY, Ala.- Off 5th Street South in Phenix City there is a soccer field with an immaculate patch of grass.
Former Russell County School District employee Ben Baker’s grandson and others are set to play on that field. Baker says the field needs a fence due to a creek that runs by the field. Baker says the creek is a hazard and a fence would keep soccer balls from going in there. Baker says if a ball goes in, he wouldn’t want anybody going in to get it.
He says he and others have tried to get something done, they’ve even raised money for the fence, but he says parks and recreation will not do anything. Baker added they are not trying to go around or over anybody. “It’s heartbreaking,” Baker said. “I don’t know if it’s politics. I don’t know what’s causing it not to be done, but whatever it is, somebody should open their heart and realize they’re not doing this for me. I’m not gonna get anything out of it, but the kids play down here will get something out of it and it’ll mean a lot to them and it would mean a lot to Phenix City.”
News 3 reached out to Parks and Recreation, but so far, no response.
