Weekend Events: October 23rd – October 25th

It’s another fabulous weekend to get out and enjoy the outdoors, and there’s a lot going on this weekend!

This weekend’s highlighted event is Carnival Tragedy, A Centennial Remembrance. Come out to Riversdale Cemetery on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until  2:00 p.m. EDT in Columbus to hear about the 1915 carnival and passenger train crash.

There will be a wreath laying following the presentation. You can also enjoy costume re-enactors, cemetery tours, live music, food and a 1915 exhibit. The cost is $5 per adult and children under 12 get in free.

Ken Thomas is a historian and one of the event coordinators. He says, “This memorial here that’s shaped like a carnival circus tent is something that everybody looks at, it’s on the cemetery’s tour. I grew up being brought here by my grandparents to see the grave marker. And people talk about it. It’s unusual. It’s all over the internet and all over the world about this particular monument. We decided we wanted to explain the situation about what happened.”

Thomas adds that it’s also a great way for people to not only to learn about local history but about their own ancestors as well.
