BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — One person is confirmed dead and all lanes are closed after a multiple vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler on I-20/59 southbound.
Two lanes of I-59 N are closed to reroute traffic from I-59 S.
According to Birmingham Police, three vehicles were involved including an 18-wheeler. Police say the 18-wheeler hit one of the overhead interstate signs. The sign came down across the interstate, and the 18-wheeler overturned.
The accident happened at I-20/59 southbound at Arkadelphia Road. Lt. Edwards with the Birmingham PD says an SUV, a small car and an 18-wheeler were involved in the crash. There was only one minor injury. The deceased was in the 18-wheeler.
Edwards said the truck was carrying large rolls of paper.
Birmingham City Schools said that buses are stuck in the traffic, and will be delayed.
Chanda Temple with Birmingham City Schools said that other bus drivers have picked up all students stranded at schools. Temple said the empty buses stuck on the interstate are still there, but there are no students on them.
According to police, rescue workers walked to the accident since the roadway is blocked.
Linda Crockett with ALDOT said that crews will not be able to remove the sign from the roadway until investigators are finished working the scene of the accident.
When investigators are finished, ALDOT will remove the sign, which will take 45 minutes to an hour.
