COLUMBUS, Ga. – Kmart employees evacuated the Airport Thruway store Saturday afternoon. Employees called police when they realized a customer had left an unattended backpack in the store.
The incident delayed a few customers’ shopping trips.
“Their helmets and their flak jackets out and we assumed there was a bomb inside. I was just kind of excited and curios so I parked next door and walked over here,” customer Carl Moore said.
Authorities determined the backpack safe and allowed employees back inside the store around 3:30 Saturday afternoon. Police tell News Three the backpack had clothes from inside.
They believe the person who left the backpack was most likely trying to shoplift. Police said they think the person had stolen some clothes at other stores before coming to Kmart.
