2-year-old shot at Elizabeth Canty Homes

UPDATE (9:15 p.m).: COLUMBUS, Ga.- The toddler’s 5-year-old sibling was handling the gun when it discharged, hitting the 2-year-old boy in the hand, according to police. They say the child got a hold of the firearm inside their home and was playing with it when the incident happened.

Police say the children’s mother, 20-year-old Bakina Fortson, is facing charges in connection with the shooting. She is being charged with False Report of a Crime and Reckless Conduct.

 

PREVIOUS REPORTING: A 2-year-old has been sent to the hospital after being shot this evening.

Columbus police say they were called out to the Elizabeth Canty Homes off 20th Avenue around 6:30 p.m. On the scene, they discovered the toddler with a gunshot wound to their hand.

The child was taken to Midtown Medical Center with a non-life threatening wound.

There is no word on any suspects.
