COLUMBUS, Ga. – There were 22 homicides last year in Columbus – ten of those were related to domestic violence.
Hope Harbour is a shelter that provides 33 beds for women and children who are leaving domestic violence situations.
The women and children are given what they need for daily living as they work to get back on their feet.
Hope Harbour’s largest fundraiser, The Celebration of Hope, will be next month.
“We are funded through grant programs, however, support from the community and through our fundraiser is how we provide those extra things that aren’t covered in grants and we wouldn’t survive without these kind of things,” said Executive Director Lindsey Reis.
Last year alone, there were over 3,400 domestic violence calls made to the Columbus Police Department. According to Reis, only about a fourth of all domestic violence incidents are ever reported.
