Initial MERS test proves negative for EAMC patient

Initial MERS tests have proven negative for the patient who was admitted earlier in the month.

Alabama Public Health officials say the patient who was tested for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome has initially proved negative for the disease.

The patient was first admitted to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika on August 13 with breathing issues. The hospital trip followed the patient’s return from Saudi Arabia. As a precautionary measure, the hospital staff isolated the patient and conducted several tests, including MERS.

Public Health officials say that even though preliminary tests at the state lab were negative, they will need to do additional testing on the patient to confirm whether or not he or she has MERS.
