COLUMBUS, Ga. – The man who drowned in the Chattahoochee River Thursday night has now been identified as 30-year-old Hernandez Wilson of Columbus.
That’s according to Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Charles Newton.
Lieutenant John McMichael with Columbus Police tells News 3 that police were called down to Rotary Park around 10:00 p.m. after witnesses say Wilson was acting irrationally. We’re told when officers arrived, they approached the man and started talking to him. But then, McMichael says, Wilson ran towards the boat ramp and into the water, when he lost his footing and went under.
Authorities say rescue crews worked for about 30 minutes to try and save Wilson before his body was recovered. Newton says his body will be sent to Atlanta for an autopsy.
This is Columbus’s second drowning in the Chattahoochee this year, and the fourth in a lake or river.
