Tornado confirmed in Russell County

National Weather Service meteorologists from the Birmingham office have confirmed a tornado that occurred from Thursday’s nights storms.

The tornado affected the Avalon neighborhood which is approximately 3 miles southwest of Fort Mitchell.

Meteorologists say the the tornado was a brief EF0 with 70 mph winds with a path length of 1.99 miles. The maximum width of the tornado was 250 yards.

The tornado touched down just north of Avalon Church on Tarver Road near Seale and tracked northeastward through the Avalon Community causing sporadic tree damage and damage to outbuildings and unsecured objects. The tornado continued northeastward crossing Pine Haven Street where sporadic tree damage continued with at least one tree blown down across the road. The tornado continued across the road for a short distance and quickly dissipated.
