ATLANTA (AP) – A man who escaped from a Georgia prison in 1981 has been recaptured after 34 years on the loose.
The U.S. Marshals Service on Thursday said 60-year-old Willie Lee Austin was captured by members of a Florida-based fugitive task force.
Austin has been on lam since Dec. 27, 1981. That’s when he escaped from the Central State Correctional Institute in Macon. Federal officials say Austin was serving a 15-year sentence for an armed robbery in Muscogee County when he fled.
Investigators looking into his case found a possible alias for the man and linked it to an address in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida.
The Marshals Service says officers used the address to find Austin and arrested him without incident on Wednesday.
