Northbound I-185 reopens following highway homicide in Columbus

Early morning shooting leaves northbound I-185 shut down and one person dead in Columbus

UPDATE: Highway I-185 northbound is reopened at this time, according to a News 3 crew who is on scene. Since around 3am the road has been shut down between Victory Drive and Buena Vista Road due to a homicide investigation.


UPDATE:

The victim in this highway homicide is being identified as 24-year-old Keith Turner. This is according to Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley.


ORIGINAL STORY:

COLUMBUS, Ga. — A man was murdered early Saturday morning after being shot around 3am in a car while on the northbound lane of Highway I-185. This is according to Columbus Police officers. They also tell News 3 they do not know when the highway will reopen to motorists. CPD tells us their investigators are trying to gather as much evidence as possible from the homicide scene.

CPD detectives say no suspects are in custody and the hunt for whomever did this is underway.

Police have a heavy presence on the highway and caution tape is blocking off the lane between Victory Drive and Buena Vista Road. Dozens of people, who appear to possibly be the victim’s family or friends, are on the scene along with a Muscogee County Coroner van. Many drivers are upset because they are trying to head north on the highway, but are being rerouted by police.
