Church recreation worker indicted on child porn charges

Jason Hankins has been indicted on four counts related to child pornography.

(AP/WIAT) – Federal prosecutors say a Shelby County church recreation worker has been indicted on child porn charges.

Authorities said in a statement Thursday that 34-year-old Jason Michael Hankins is charged in a four-count indictment with production, receipt and possession of child pornography dating back to 2013.

Prosecutors say Hankins worked at the Shades Crest Baptist Church in Hoover and found at least one victim by targeting a single mother through a Christian dating website. Officials say Hankins worked in the church’s Family Life Center.

Hankins reportedly found at least one victim by seeking out a single mother on a Christian dating website.

Court records don’t list an attorney for Hankins and a call to a number listed for him wasn’t answered. Court records say his arraignment is scheduled for July 9. The FBI investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacquelyn Hutzell is prosecuting.

The release states, “The maximum penalty for producing child pornography is 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, per count. The maximum penalty for each count of receiving and possessing child pornography is 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.”

An indictment contains only charges; the release states a defendant is presumed innocent of charges until the government proves the defendant’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt at trial.

In May, Hankins plead not guilty to 9 additional charges producing photographic images of a child. He was already in jail on six prior charges.
