Lethal injection drug secrecy bill resurfaces

Lethal injection drug secrecy bill resurfaces (Image 1)

(AP) – A committee has resurrected a bill to keep secret the names of execution drug suppliers.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the bill Wednesday after previously canceling a meeting.

Alabama has executed inmates by lethal injection since 2002. Republican Representative Lynn Greer says the state has had trouble obtaining lethal injection drugs because suppliers fear backlash from death penalty opponents.

The bill has a narrow window to win approval. Some legislators say lawmakers night adjourn as early as Thursday or as late as next week when it will be up for final passage.

Executions in Alabama are on hold as the U.S. Supreme Court reviews the humaneness of a lethal injection drug Alabama plans to use.

A new version of the bill stripped a provision to use the electric chair if the state couldn’t obtain lethal injection drugs.
