Atlanta police have arrested one of their own after they say he purposely let a murder suspect escape. A police report shows Officer Tommy Williams was arrested May 21. He faces charges of violation of oath of public office, obstruction of an officer and hindering apprehension of a criminal.
Atlanta police say Jabri Mathis is accused of shooting a man in his car in April. The police report says Officer Williams let Mathis escape through the window of a house on James P. Brawley Drive while other officers were trying to catch him. They say Williams then lied to other officers about seeing the suspect run away. Officers caught Mathis a short time later. The report says Mathis told officers Williams let him escape and that he knew the officer “like an uncle”.
Police say Williams is suspended without pay and relieved of duty. Williams’ lawyer did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
