Authorities have dropped the charges against an Athens veteran who was arrested after breaking a window to free a dog from a hot car.

Michael Hammons was charged with criminal trespassing on May 12 after smashing out a window when he saw a distressed dog in the heat.

The car’s owner agreed with the decision to drop charges against Hammons. The owner was cited for leaving the dog in the hot car.

Georgia state law allows a person to break a car window to save a child in distress. However, the same protection does not apply to pets.
