Thanks to a big win over the Central Red Devils, the Northside Patriot basketball team was named the latest Headquarter Nissan Athletes of the Week.
“We knew if we played well and executed, we could beat them,” said senior guard Matthew Richardson. “We just went out there and played hard. Fortunately, we got the ‘W.’”
Richardson had 18 points, while Davion Thomas led the Patriots with 23 in a game between area powers.
“We played strong,” said junior guard Keyon Robinson. “We started picking up the intensity. It was a very intense game. We came out with a win.”
“Central is one of the top teams in the state of Alabama, and certainly one of the better teams in this area,” said Northside head coach Kenneth Lawrence. “Coach Bobby Wright and his staff has done an outstanding job, so I always love competing against them because I know they’re going to bring out the best in you, so it was a big win.”
Next up for Northside is a road test against Sandy Creek. For this team, it’s state title or bust this season.
“Friday night’s going to be a big game,” Richardson said. “We have a lot of players from last year coming back, so we feel like we have a team that could compete on that state championship level. Anything less than a state championship would be a letdown for us this year.”
