Columbus State golfer Robert Mize has long been famous for his last name, shared by Masters-winning father Larry.
But he’s quickly making his own name for himself, and is the latest Headquarter Nissan Athlete of the Week.
Mize won the Georgia Amateur golf tournament last weekend at Idle Hour Golf Club in Macon, shooting a three-under 67 on the final day.
He joined some rarified air.
“To be a part of that history is awesome,” Mize said. “Of course, the first name on the trophy is Bobby Jones. When you get your name on a trophy with Bobby Jones, you know you’re doing something pretty special.”
Mize says he is never satisfied, and wants to continue improving.
“You need to focus on the process and playing well, how do I play well?” he said. “It’s just working on all aspects of the game, everything just needs to keep improving.”
Mize next plays in one of the premiere amateur tournaments in the country, the Porter Cup in Niagra Falls. It began on Thursday.
